Greenland Paddlers is a site for modern-day paddlers who choose to use greenland-inspired paddles as part of their everyday gear. Whilst we encourage anyone with an interest to learn about the traditions of Greenland and Inuit paddle design, this site is not about traditional greenland kayaking. We are about the here and now, modern day paddling with modern day equipment, combined with a paddler’s right to use a greenland paddle if he/she chooses.
Regardless of the style of paddling you like, the true joy that eminates from being in a kayak or other paddle craft on the water is derived by the freedom of the activity. Even white-water adrenalin addicts will admit that just being under your own power in a small boat outdoors on the water is a true pleasure. The freedom is the addiction.
Paddle choice can however be dictated by popular opinion. Is a wing-paddle faster great for straight line speed? Of course. But is it the best for rolling a kayak? Or is a euro paddle the best paddle for long marathon cruises? The use of Greenland paddles is often derided as “historical, but not very effective”, and yet there is a slow-burning resurgence in its use as paddlers discover the joy of using a stick.
This website is for those who love to use their greenland or aleutian paddle. Whether you keep one as a spare only, or if you prefer as your “first paddle”, this site is for you. If you are a paddler and thinking of trying one, then this site is for you.
Enjoy the revolution! Cheers – Fat Paddler

Since I made my first Aleut paddle I haven’t used my Werner carbon fibre blade again. The Werner’s still a great paddle but I’m finding the stick to be more versatile. Because there is little known about how the Aleutians used their paddles It’s been an adventure for me to see just what my paddle can do. I was told it wouldn’t be any good in the surf, but I catch my fair share of waves. Stern rudder stroke on the face of a wave or behind my sail is much better than my euro blabe was. Other kayakers have told me they didnt want to paddle with Greenland paddlers because they were too slow but my friends and I can match it with most eure paddlers. Even when using my Aleut storm pddle with a sliding stroke speed isn’t sacrificed. Other kayakers are starting to take notice when they see our small band exclusively using traditional paddles and going ok. Vanilla.
